Abstract

Modal particles represent a special characteristic of German due to their polyfunctionality and high prevalence. In the case of translation they frequently cause problems and also in foreign language teaching they are difficult to convey, because they do not have direct equivalents in other languages. The present study examines, on the basis of a corpus, which linguistic means the function of German modal particles - in particular, ‘ja’, ‘doch’, ‘schon’, ‘eben’ and ‘halt’ – can assume in Spanish. The translation possibilities for each individual particle are different depending on the context and usage.
