Abstract

This paper provides a brief biography of Walter Benjamin and summarises the ideas exposed in his essay Die Übersetzers (translated into English as The Task of the Translator). According to Benjamin, every literary work is translatable, and what is essential in literary translation is to convey its poetic sense. Benjamin advocates transferring a text from one culture to another literally, without facilitating its reading to the target readership, but forcing them to get closer to the original readership’s point of view. Finally, the author considers that the importance of this essay lies in the fact that Benjamin does not approach translation as an end, but as a mean to achieve a higher purpose: a pure language which communicates the truth.
