Abstract
This paper argues that there have been two major waves of translation and correspondingly two bodies of translation theorising that need our attention, based on formations that are here called fundamentalism and foundationism. The paper proposes a third take on the matter that identifies earlier efforts as prisoners of two variant of a missionary approach to the task. The work of Quine is seen as central to the rethinking enterprise required.
