This book aims to by-pass the usual accounts that focus on the source text, and proposes a socio-cultural model of translation. It investigates six successive translations of Hamlet into French (1745-1977), showing how each was influenced by the theatrical and literary norms dictated by the expectations of audiences and literary establishments at the time.
