Abstract
Talking Notes audio introductions address the needs of vision-impaired patrons at the opera and ballet. They give a coherent account of the plot, and illustrate it with vivid descriptions of sets, costumes, characterization and stage business. The production technique includes research, essential elements of scripting, the use of appropriate presenters, the relevance of musical examples, and methods of reproduction. A comprehensive audio introductions gives enough colourful detail for the vision-impaired patron to visualize the production before curtain up and allows for uninterrupted enjoyment of the performance; In London, for the last thirteen year these audio introductions have been a vital ingredient of the access policies at the English National Opera and Royal Opera House, where they are available at all performances.
