Abstract

In the context of globalization and internationalization a monolingual country, where everyone understands each other, becomes utopian. Multiculturalism and multilingualism not only bring cultural diversity, but also numerous problems, for example in the field of interpersonal communication. Language barriers in every day life have to be overcome. How do foreigners with limited knowledge of German make themselves understood when they have to go to hospital for example? This book discusses the nature of community interpreting, interpreting in the social sector. The situation in Germany in discussed and compared with that in other countries.
