Abstract
This paper provides theoretical evidence that social agency has been an integral part of already existing TS paradigms, namely of those proposed by Holmes and Popovic, and argues that recent calls for the injection of Bourdieu into the TS paradigm are irrelevant form this point of view. Most of the calls are based on Holmes' (1977/1988) paradigm, Even-Zohar's general model and Toury's (1995) work. Although models and theories derive form paradigms, they may not necessarily aspire to model the whole object or all of its aspects; furthermore, some aspects may be more prominent and elaborated in them than others. The two paradigms reveal striking similarities, and not only in the delimitaiton of social agency; one reason for the resemblance may be that Holmes and Popovic maintained close contacts at the turn of the 60's and 70's. This is why we can 'read' Holmes through Popovic and shed some light on his understanding of social agency. On the other hand, Popovic's work has been a legitimate part of TS, even though not easily accessible.
