Abstract

The article discusses the role of cross-cultural factors in pilot-controller communication and is based on three case studies. While controlled languages are typically considered culture-neutral, the author demonstrates that cultural factors can in fact influence interactions and decisions, meaning that "Airspeak" as a controlled language needs to be studied on the evidential basis of available corpora in order to better understand its use an dhow this relates to prescribed forms and meanings.
