Abstract

The article investigates the hybrid phenomenon of deverbal nouns, which exhibit characteristics of both verbs and nouns, in a Norwegian manual used on oil platforms and concerned with steam generation and distribution. Following a morphological analysis of the 154 types of deverbal nouns identified, the author discusses some ways in which these are not typical nouns as a word class. It is also points out that such nouns frequently exhibit logical polysemy i.e. have a dynamic and a static sense; some can also be shown to have an argument structure. Extending the analysis on a pragmatic level (information structure). The author concludes that this under-researched area (in relation to LSP) is promising for future research, particualry in terminology.
