Abstract

The article discusses the problems in multilingual communication, which could be exacerbated by the challenges of multiculturalism. The author explores both the sociocultural practices and the epistemic persuasions nourishing ambiguous stances on multiculturalism as well as deficiencies of choice, that is to say limited learning opportunities with regard to multilingual specialized discourse, focusing on local manifestation (in the region of Piedmont and the city of Turin) of a more general trend. The author claims that: a) language teachers need to work on perceptions and representations of languages; b) the LSP profession needs to endorse a policy of domain specific multilingualism; c) LSP scholars should promote appreciation of their concerns amongst the wider public.
