This book discusses the role of translators in cultural mediation and emphasizes their role in the construction of a national language and literature. Emphasis is put on the way their way of translating reflects their relationship to their own national identity and what is foreign. Cases in point are two nations and cultures situated in two extremes of Europe: Bulgaria and France. Looking at the history of translation practices allows to better understand current issues: which translation for which mediation between cultures.
