The article traces the evolution of linguistic resources from data banks to knowledge databases, describing a number of innovative refinements that have taken place, such as the development of thematic resources, the classification of data on the basis of pragmatic and communicative criteria, and the inclusion of explicit grammatical information. The author describes the GENOME project which resulted in the creation of a knowledge database on the specialized subject of the human genome.
