Abstract
In this article the author explores the notion of disparity between source and target texts. He first looks at some definitions of the concept 'disparity' and then considers what disparity does and does not entail in the context of Translation Studies, providing supporting examples. The author concludes that disparity affects the aesthetic and literary value of a work judged in the light of contemporary norms.
