This article revises a controversy which took place in the 17th century in an area of the Virrreinato del Río de la Plata. The teaching of catechism to guarani Indians aroused a conflict between religious orders. Semantic reasons supporting the impossibility of transferring specific contents to languages apparently incapable of admitting them are offered. Bible translation exemplifies disturbing problems when examining linguistic abilities to fill semantic voids.
