Abstract
The article traces the many changes in the libretto of Massenet's Le Roi de Lahore and the alterations by the composer to the music score for the different representations of the same production in Italy in 1878. Alterations were made to cater for Italian theatrical taste. The translation was also done having in mind the language conventions of Italian 19th century opera.
