Abstract
The article looks at the way to produce surtitles for opera. After analysing the many constraints of various natures the author suggests two essential qualities surtitles should have. The first is informative concision, and the second the synchronicity with the music. The article sees the surtitler as a specialised translator who has to work hard to prepare quality work.
