Abstract

The article traces through the different translations of Wagner's Ring, the concept of libretto translation and the many features present in Wagner's language, including archaisms and alliterations. After a detailed study three large groups of translations can be identified. The first is the idea of making French sound Teutonic. The second poses the problem of the translation in prose or with meter, and the third is the case of translations used only for reading purposes to be an aid when opera is sung in German -which was the fashion towards the end of the 20th century.
