Abstract
The article evaluates with terms such as 'unfaithful' and 'free' the Duprez's translation of Verdi's Rigoletto. The function of the translation to be read and not sung is discussed. The translation does not take into consideration the music score, which was altered in the translation with the addition of an aria for Maddalena to sing. This aria was taken from a romance Il poveretto also written by Verdi; hence the stylistic unit of the opera was not altered.
