Abstract

The author looks at the many elements present both in music and language: syntax, form, meaning both external and internal and the many possible forms of communication. Rhetoric can also be studied in both texts and music. With this background the article looks at Mozart's compositions, and Don Giovanni in particular, analysing the rhetoric in both music and text. The article proposes that while in some cases Mozart respected the rhetorical composition of the text, in others he created his own rhetorical meaning through musical means alone. Mozart's personal meaning through musical rhetoric should be taken into consideration when translationg the libretto, since the musical text also has a meaning.
