Comics all over the world are not only published in different languages but also in different formats, such as comic book, album, tanköbon, etc. When translated, comics may retain their original format or be adapted to the publishing conventions of the target culture. However, often the graphic elements of comics make cultural adaptation difficult and expensive for publishers. Drawing on the theories of Antoine Berman and Lawrence Venuti, it is argued that translated comics cannot help but reveal their foreign origin, and that their 'domestication' is virtually impossible without a marked departure form the original work. Examples discussed include translations of Japanese, American and European comics.
