One of the main objectives of this survey was to determine the areas of specialization of Scientific and Technical Translation Service Providers (TTSP) working from English into European Portuguese (EP) during the last five years. Data revealed that TTSP from English to target European Portuguese are mostly young independent professionals who are translating into their mother tongue (EP). The majority are graduates in Humanities and more particularly, in Translation. The proportion of scientific and technical translation undertaken by these translators as against their total production varies, although for about 70 % of them it represents more than half their work load. They primarily translate from English to European Portuguese and most work is based on the Technological Sciences, Medicine and the Life Sciences. The respondents indicated that they were acutely aware of the need to specialize in translating scientific and technical text and a reasonable number took training courses. The interpretation of the data showed that progress had been made and revealed trends as well as failings in translator-education.
