Abstract

What do you have to be able to do to become an interpreter? In order to permit someone to interpreting courses, aptitude tests have already been in use for years at many French speaking and Anglophone universities. These tests focus mainly on consecutive interpreting and to a large extent ignore simultaneous interpreting. Since in Germany a conversion of the study paths from “Diplom-Dolmetscher” (certified interpreter) to “MA-Konferenzdolmetschen” (Master in Conference Interpreting) is taking place, an aptitude test, which takes into account this kind of interpreting, becomes increasingly relevant. In this book a suitable model for interpreting is provided, that should also discern the abilities, authority and personality characteristics (the so-called soft skills) of test persons, on which the sub-processes of simultaneous interpreting are based. An empirical study about the testing of this test was carried out with 25 students and 8 professionals.
