Abstract

The poet, playwright, novelist, memoirist and translator, Agustí Bartra (Barcelona, 1908-Terrassa, 1982) can be considered the first and foremost link between Catalan literature and English and American High Modernity. The High Modernity of T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens or Marianne Moore can be seen in three distinct ways in Bartra’s vast literary output: as a direct influence on his original work in verse and prose; in paratextual devices and deeply significant intertextual links; and in his numerous translations. His pioneering work, Una antologia de la lírica nord-americana (1951), a survey of American poetry from Walt Whitman to Peter Vierick, can be considered the Catalan gateway to modern American poetry, High Modernity included.
