Abstract

This articles deals with both the knowledge translators need for translating and the actual knowledge passed on to translators during their training. On the basis of deconstruction theory, Arrojo argues that knowledge is not a natural given, but rather an institution or conventional construct. Therefore, the decision of which knowledge is passed on to translators is intrinsically linked to the issue of power. From a psychoanalytical point of view, Arrojo adds that a lack of knowledge can be interpreted as an active resistance to knowledge. Therefore, teachers should try to evoke the hunger for knowledge in their students, but also sensitize them to the power relations involved in the "passing on" of knowledge both during their training and in the translation process.
