Abstract

Teaching literary works in translation is first of all making students read literary works. This volume presents the full text of the lectures and reports of the workshops held at the 2006 conference organized by la direction de l'Enseignement scolaire. For both the lectures and workshops, the emphasis was on demonstrating how to free oneself of methodological principles, in order to be able to thoroughly read translated literary works. This means examining not only their relation to the source text, of which the language is sometimes not very accessible, but also examining their connection to literature itself. This volume offers, next to a theoretical frame, practical suggestions for the approach of about thirty novels in translation, representing great literary genres (poetry, theatre, novels) using the example of masterpieces of European literature (Oedipus, Macbeth, Don Quichotte, Faust…), but also those of youth literature (L. Carroll, C. Collodi, E. Kästner, A. Lindgren, R. Stevenson…), and titles from the Renaissance translated in Latin, or novels in Japanese or Serbo-Croat.
