The author argues for a holistic approach to oral interpretation: The necessity of obtaining sufficient preinformation about the conference situation, speakers and hearers is exemplified. The importance of paralinguistic and nonverbal phenomena in the 'decoding' and 'recoding' of speech performances is stressed and illustrated by a series of photos taken from a video in which an actor changes the meaning of a text by using different mimics, gestures and body postures.
