This paper intends to describe how relators of aim work in French. Aim, which has been studied since ancient times and was considered to be stable turns out not homogeneous at all, as it is made up of various lexical elements rendering this relationship. In order to establish the semantically heterogeneous nature of the idea of aim, the theoretical notion of object classes has been used, which was developed at the LLI. It is shown that the expression of aim is rendered not only by the preposition pour, but also by nouns designating various types of place (but), perception (vue), intellectual operation (intention) and feelings (désir, peur). These different lexical means are correlated to different meanings and specific syntactical properties. The study more generally shows that the expression of aim is much more complex than suggested by the few dozen expressions that grammar books usually quote.
