This article deals with the problem of jargon vocabulary in translations of official documents in English – Polish translation. Publications of this kinds, and their translations, will probably become even more frequent, which is connected with the necessity of Poland adapting to the European structures and, consequently, the need for translations of legal, economic and other EU regulations. Since the number of publications of this kind is huge, the Polish Committee for Standardization developed the idea to leave the documents in their original language version and make them accessible to the public in this form. The sample translation is part of a document which sets the rules for bibliographies of electronic documents and their fragments, and it is “identical with the applied international regulation”. The development of the electronic media created the difficulty with marking those references which have their sources in the internet or e-mail. The document referred to by the author formulates the regulation by means of the terms, mostly jargon, employed by computer technology, which does not allow for the language to develop official computer terminology. Replacing this terminology with jargon, or retaining the original language version is the solution favoured by the translators in the Polish Committee for Standardization. [Based on abstract in book]
