Abstract

The article discusses the utilization of research results among Finnish technical communicators. Technical communication is a relatively new field of study in Finland and it is gradually attracting more and more attention both academically and socially. The role of technical communication has increased with the explosion of the computer and high technology industries, and with the expansion of the information society. Technical communicators design, write, edit and update technical texts for a variety of purposes and target audiences. They work in a collaborative work environment, which is characterized by rapid technological development. This along with gradual professionalization and a lack of established routines have created a need for information, which could help cope with the different tasks that technical communicators perform. The article discusses the role of research-based knowledge as a response to Finnish technical communicators’ need for information: do they seek support from research and how do they take advantage of research results in their work?
