Abstract

The paper presents a description of English certificates as a type of legal text. It discusses their relevant semantic and pragmatic features as well as their overall structure. The analysis focuses on the theory of speech acts and the notion of the legal performative in particular. It also comments on the classifications of speech acts and speech act verbs. The analysis is based on a corpus of authentic English legal documents and illustrated with examples drawn from this corpus.
