Abstract

Aptitude tests are predominantly used in the training of conference interpreters. Their role in the curriculum is undisputable, and the differences between them depend on their particular place in the course, their content, or the methodology. Their validity in forecasting the abilities to acquire the interpreting strategies is diversified. The article reviews the tests used in different centers in order to discuss their validity and presents a set of proposals for such tests at the training courses. In the course of training, one should acquire the basic knowledge along with the appropriate strategies that will permit one to pass to the stage of unconscious automatization, indispensable in professional interpretation. In the second part of the article, the author discusses the place and the role of aptitude tests used at the beginning of the training in order to present the requirements indispensable to become professional interpreters.
