The author focuses on the phenomenon of a “translation series” exemplifying her theoretical arguments which excerpts from three translations into Polish of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The translations, chosen from the total number of seven, were made by A. Marianowicz (1955), M. Słomczyński (1972) and J. Kozak (1999). A feature common to all the three translators is the perception of the novel: they see the key to its understanding in the formal representation of the text which is at the same time a specific source of the text’s pragmatics. However, in each case their diagnosis of the text is different with the ensuing different model of the potential reader, different translation strategy and different final products. Thanks to the varied methods the translators used, three totally different translations appeared. Each of them fits well into some general framework of translation tendencies of the time to which they belonged, although their translators may have a different degree of awareness of this fact.
