This article does not focus on the linguistics of translation, but looks at translation as cultural transfer. The article focuses on three issues concerning the Estonian translation of Two Solitudes: 1) the quality of the translation; 2) the reception of the Estonian translation among the Estonian diaspora in Canada of the 1960s as well as among its readers in Soviet Estonia; 3) the possible transnational message of the novel for contemporary Estonia and the semiotic tasks it sets for its future translators. According to the author, the translator’s function in a given culture at a given time would be to receive, translate, and interpret this message in such a way as to underline its relevance to political discourse analysis, a task that would be of benefit to Estonia as well as to intercultural communication elsewhere in the international community.
