For political reasons, Canadian literature was quite unknown in Estonia until 1991. During the Soviet occupation in 1944-1991, Estonia was entirely cut off from the Western world. Personal ties with Canada were not tolerated, especially since a considerable number of Estonian refugees, including numerous prominent figures from the literary and cultural community, had settled down in Canada, mostly Toronto, and their influence was considered to be ideologically subversive. Hugh MacLennan’s Two Solitudes was translated into Estonian by an Estonian writer and journalist who lived in Canada in exile and it was published in 1962 in Toronto. The author of this article explains that when the book finally reached Estonia, the language of the translation was actually already outdated.
