This chapter offers an overview of the statements by the different panellists of the debate held during the International Interpreting Conference in Turku in 1994. The different papers have been edited and re-arranged to give a coherent perspective of the debate. The first two papers (“Conference interpreting: the background to research and training” by Riccardi; and “Research and training today: two separate worlds?” by Gringiani) contain an overview of research development and its influence on training, and current attitudes towards the interaction between two worlds. The second two (“Training the interpreter: note-taking strategies” by Aarup; and “Training the interpreter: text selection for consecutive interpreting” by Nicholson) focus on training the interpreter. Two conclusions round off the paper: one intentionally individual viewpoint from Viaggio (“The interaction between research and the profession: training”, and the other (“Research and training: a conclusion?” by Katan), an intentionally objective rapporteur’s conclusion to the discussion.
