Abstract

In this paper the author pursues three objectives. Firstly he sketches a larger picture in order to specify the place of computer-assisted translation (CAT) within the framework of the translation process as a whole. He then moves on to outline what approach to integrating CAT into translator training has been taken at Leipzig University. Lastly he illustrates some of his points with data obtained in research that accompanies computer-assisted translation classes in his department. The author’s thesis is that in translator training in particular, a computer-assisted work environment can, if properly designed and implemented, provide exactly that guidance and support and help accumulate translation experience that would otherwise have to grow over a much longer period of time.
