Abstract

The author’s main concern in this article is to consider the practical realities of literary translation and how these might be presented within Arts degree courses in British universities. Several obvious questions come to mind. How does one strike the right balance between theory and practice? And most important of all, how does one build bridges between the protected environment of a university or college institution and the tough commercially-orientated literary market? Because the literary translator, whatever his background or professional status, must seek to unite effort and experience, while satisfying the interests of both author and publisher.
