Abstract

This article was originally written in 1680. The author proposes a trichotomy of translation terms: metaphrase (word-for-word), paraphrase (sense-for-sense) and imitation (free translation). The author states that the two extremes (metaphrase and imitation) ought to be avoided and that a competent translator should aim for a compromise.
