Abstract
Because of the growing number of television channels and the wide distribution of DVDs, audiovisual programs are exchanged increasingly more often. These programs need to be translated into several languages for maximal distribution. Developments in the field of audiovisual translation have been considerable in recent years. New techniques have emerged to meet the expectations of the public. Subtitling, a major form of audiovisual translation, is not a new technique, but new developments take into account both technological advances and characteristics of the public, who can now choose between multiple subtitled or dubbed versions of one film, according to which language the viewer wants to display on the screen. The developments in subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio description for the blind and visually impaired also attest considerable progress in the field of accessibility to the media for this audience. This book helps the reader to understand the increasingly important function of multilingual support in audiovisual media.
