Abstract

After an introduction to the situation of interpreting in Australia, the paper embarks upon the national accreditation authority for translators and interpreters (NAATI). This is an organization charged with the tasks of establishing and monitoring the standard to meet all of Australia’s interpreting and translating needs. The next topic is the implementation of NAATI’s mandate, focusing on the establishment of the standards and the means of accreditation. Moreover, it discusses the challenges of implementation. This subdivision investigates standardization, governance and funding issues. Finally, it offers a look-into the future. Accreditation beyond Australia and registration is looked into in this heading.
