This article describes the limitation or censure that the self-translator imposes on him/herself when translating from one culture into another. Two texts are presented for the purpose of this analysis: Jorge Semprún’s translation of Federico Sanchez vous salue bien (1993), his original text in French, into the Spanish, Federico Sánchez se despide de ustedes (1993), and Carlo Coccioli’s, Piccolo karma (1987), originally published in Italian and then translated into Spanish under the title of Pequeño Karma (2001). It may be inferred that some changes that we understand as self-censorship made in these autobiographical texts are the result, on the one hand, of the bicultural condition for the author and, on the other, the need to find a filter or other forms of “self-discipline” so that, as Semprún points out, the rewriting of text does not become an exercise in the creation of a completely new text.
