Although it is significant to see how language planning is projected onto such specific domains as translation (Blommaert 1999: 30), “translation is assigned very little room if any at all” in the discussions of language planning (1999).To bridge this gap, this paper aims to show how the ideologies of standardization and purism which are inextricably bound up with the discourses on language, i.e. metalinguistic discourses, act as a source of censoring apparatus for the translators. Placing language ideologies within the specific context of Turkish, the present paper argues that the public discourses on purism and standardization impose censorship on the Turkish translators who have thus been systematically standardizing the heteroglossic source texts where non-standard varieties become the expression of imagined sub-national communities. Citing various (non)official discourses on correct, i.e. standard, Turkish, this paper notes that censorship can be imposed on translations in such a mystified way that it does not appear as censorship at all.
