Abstract

This paper is an account of a translation experience marked by the translator’s engagement in the cause that guided the elaboration of The Black Book of Women’s Condition. This work, whose contributors – around 40 – are experts from all over the world and from many fields of knowledge, aims at fighting diverse forms of violence against women, through the break of a complacent silence that sanctions the continuation of these acts. The translation has, thence, a political role, as it multiplies the virtual readers of the text and will assuredly lead them to a reflection on their own conduct and the limits of what is acceptable, for the others and for themselves. It also offers the opportunity to get acquainted with facts that happen in a world scale and affects societies. In a response to these facts, the social body – that is, nations, through international representatives – may demand modifications that will be an integral part of our history. The essay also explores the motivations that have conducted the translator’s work and indicates the ethic on which her practice was based. The sum of these effects promotes the Other’s protection and sheltering, creating a link between “us” and “them” by means of the written word.
