Abstract

The translation of texts regarded as “technical” represents one of the largest segments in the translation market, generating, therefore, discussions concerning the conceptualization of this text modality. The current tendency is, though, to consider as technical not only instruction manuals, scientific papers and medicine directions, but also literary, journalistic texts and even love letters. Thus, the dichotomy existing between literary and technical texts is lost, as well as the classifications attributed to the translators of those texts. In this sense, the authors aim to discuss the translation named as “technical” through the translator role; terminology (AUBERT, 2001); cultural markers (AZENHA, 1999), using real examples that many times represent challenges and traps to the translator, as well as strategies and paths taken to get to the translation of the presented terms. The focus is to abandon the mistaken concept that technical texts are quick and easy to be translated, for to translate them it is necessary to have “only” the “basic” knowledge of the specific terminology, requiring from the translator “just” the domain of the issue and the syntactic review in order to make it readable and meaningful.
