Abstract
This paper describes the efforts of the Massachusetts Medical Interpreters Association Certification Committee to develop and pilot a prototype of a tool to certify basic level competence in medical interpreting for the State of Massachusetts. The tool, the Medical Interpreting Assessment for Certification, is described in detail and the underlying principles of assessment that were used in designing the tool are also discussed.
