This paper focuses on the difficulties connected with improving the standards of interpreting provided for immigrants and refugees in Denmark. In order to investigate the need for improving the qualifications of community interpreters, three interpreting scholars from the Aarhus School of Business conducted a representative survey among interpreters and service providers in Denmark’s second largest county. The aims of the survey were to find out: (1) whether there was an actual need for new interpreter training programs; and (2) what kind of training programs would be required to meet such a need. The survey not only revealed a need for training programs, but also revealed a number of paradoxes indicating that, in order to raise standards, training programs alone will not suffice. This paper discusses the conclusions of the survey and suggests solutions.
