The provision of interpreter services to enable non-English-speaking perpetrators of domestic violence who have been mandated by the courts to participate in a 16-week psycho-educational group program was not part of the original jurisdiction of the Domestic Violence Court System when it was established by the province of Ontario in 1997. Given the specific nature of the Partner Assault Response (PAR) program and the composition of the group, interpreters were faced with challenges not addressed in the existing interpreter training programs. Preparing interpreters to work effectively in this type of forum (with perpetrators and PAR facilitators) required the identification of issues unique to PAR environments as well as the provision of the knowledge and skills that interpreters would need to meet this new challenge. This paper outlines the process and addresses the challenges that emerged during the designing and implementation of a screening tool and a specialized training program.
