Within Europe there is increasing freedom of movement between countries and a mounting flow of inward migration. As a result, equivalent standards of legal interpreting and translation are required to ensure reliable communication both for judicial cooperation between Member States of the European Union in criminal and civil matters that cross national borders, and for the needs of multilingual populations. The European Convention of Human Rights ( Article 6, paragraph 3) is one of the main planks of legislation in this regard. An international, two-year project was funded by the European Union Grotius Programme to establish selection standards, training, and assessments for legal interpreters and translators; ethical standards, a code of conduct and good practice; and interdisciplinary work arrangements with legal services. In this paper, the participants share the outcomes of their work.
