In Canada, ever since the Conquest, legal texts have had to be translated from English into French. This delicate mission has always been consigned to the translator (legal), forerunner of the “juridical linguist”. The accidental encounter of two different legal systems creates unexpected consequences for the translation. To be able to read, write or translate this specialist language, it is necessary to pass by the language of law. Not only does one have to know (and understand) the words of the language, the terminology of the required field and what it stands for (la langue), one would also have to understand the “discourse”, the way of saying things (la langage). The translator has to interpret the source text as correctly as possible and express the meaning optimally, and thus do justice to law and language.
