Abstract
The authors define what can be understood by sign language interpreting and in what situations it is used. Next, they point out that signed language interpreters can be hearing as well as Deaf people. They discuss the professionalisation of sign language interpreting and its position in Deaf communities. Next, they focus on SLI training and devote their attention to modality as a significant difference between signed and spoken languages.
